The following is an excerpt from my column in the Kitchener Post on the social assistance freeze announced in the Ontario budget.

The provincial Liberal government likes to cite Mike Harris’s war on the poor, with his major cuts to social assistance rates, as being despicable treatment for our province’s most vulnerable.

It then turns a deaf ear on calls to raise these rates to livable levels, and has allowed them to diminish further through inflation, so that Ontarians on social assistance are 5.5 per cent worse off today than under Harris.
